Mandatory headcovers for women is a topic that has been debated throughout the history of Judaism. Some rabbis believe hair covering is an absolute obligation originating from Moses at Sinai, while others say it is a standard of modesty defined by the Jewish community. The Yiddish word tichel or Hebrew word mitpachat means head scarf. Today, many married Orthodox Jewish women still wear tichels. Some also wear a wig, a practice dating back to 17th Century France. Today, the decision to cover one’s hair is based on a combination of law and custom, personal choice, and community identification. Like regular head scarves, tichel headcovers are available in styles to suit all occasions. At Headcovers, we offer tichels in a beautiful array of solid colors, patterns, and fabrics. Select from one of many pre-tied or easy-to-tie head scarves – uphold a meaningful tradition while embracing your inner fashion style.

What is a Tichel?

Tichel is a Jewish word that simply means ‘head scarf’. Orthodox Jewish women wear head coverings after they get married, often choosing a tichel to keep their hair covered. The Jewish scarf can also be worn by unmarried women or non-Orthodox Jews - it all depends on personal preference and beliefs. There are many different kinds of Jewish head coverings ranging from hasidic hats and kippah (yarmulke) for men to tichel and sheitel for women. A sheitel is a wig worn by married women, which is another option for entirely covering the hair.

Many women choose to wear tichels for non-religious reasons as well. They are fashionable head scarves that can provide a stylish or regal look for women covering hair loss, or for those who simply like the appearance of a tichel. Headcovers offers a variety of tichels in various colors, patterns, and fabrics to suit every woman’s needs.
