You're not sure how to wash a synthetic wig.

Never fear; we’ve got the scoop for you! Below is our recommended method for properly washing your synthetic wig. Just follow these steps to learn how to wash a synthetic wig, and soon you'll be a pro!

How to Wash a Synthetic Wig Step 1:

Gather The Essentials

When you start a new task, you of course need the right tools to get started. To guarantee a successful washing experience, you will need:

How to Wash a Synthetic Wig Step 2:

Work Out Tangles

Before you submerge your magnificent mane, use a wig comb to gently work out any tangles. NEVER try to force or yank out stubborn knots - this can pull out the synthetic fibers and cause damage to the wig cap.

How to Wash a Synthetic Wig Step 3:

Soak Your Wig

Next, you’ll want to fill your sink or basin with cold water (cold water is key here as hot water can seriously damage your locks).

  1. Measure out 1 tablespoon of wig shampoo, adding it to your water.
  2. Swirl the water around a bit to ensure the shampoo thoroughly mixes in.
  3. Immerse your wig underwater for 1-5 minutes. Make sure not to scrub at the wig; just allow it to soak.

How to Wash a Synthetic Wig Step 4:

Lather

Once your wig has soaked, remove it from the water and begin to gently run your fingers over the edges of the wig cap, focusing on areas where sweat and dirt show up. Be especially gentle on any hand tied areas of the cap as rubbing too vigorously could loosen the hand-tied strands.

How to Wash a Synthetic Wig Step 5:

Rinse

Run cold water over your wig until all the shampoo has been rinsed out.

How to Wash a Synthetic Wig Step 6:

On One Condition....

Once you have rinsed out your wig, apply a small amount of conditioner down the length of the hair, completely avoiding the wig cap. Thoroughly rinse the conditioner out with cold running water.

An alternate method is to very lightly spray your wig with conditioning spray. Be sure to spray 10-12 inches from the hair.

How to Wash a Synthetic Wig Step 7:

Dry Your Wig

Be gentle with your wet wig - never try to comb hair when wet as this can damage and fray the fibers. Now, place your wig on a towel. Use the towel to gently blot the wig to remove excess water. Do not scrub, squeeze, or wring out your synthetic locks. Once the additional water has been removed, place the wig on a wig stand and allow to air dry.

Tips for Luscious Locks

Below are a few tips for keeping your locks looking healthy and lush.

  • Never try to blow dry your synthetic locks - Air drying is the only way to go! Heat friendly synthetic hair can be blow dried, but it is still better for the hair to air dry whenever possible.
  • Only wash your wig every 6-8 wears.
  • As previously mentioned, NEVER brush or comb out a wet wig.
  • Wire or plastic wig stands are best - any stands shaped to look like the human head can stretch out your wig cap.
  • If you are working with a curly wig, consider washing the wig inside a hairnet to prevent frizz.
  • Only use products designed for synthetic hair on your wig.
  • Do not use a regular brush on your wig, as this can stretch the fibers. Instead, use a wig brush or a wig comb.
  • Several websites may recommend washing your wig with fabric softener or other cleaning products not related to your wig. We highly recommend not using these products as they may damage your wig.
